We are offering an exciting Master's thesis opportunity to study the behavior of fluids dispensing into standard 96- to 1536-well plates under microgravity conditions. This research aims to investigate the performance of various dispensing technologies and configurations, focusing on the critical aspects of bubble formation, surface tension effects, and fluid dynamics in a microgravity environment.
This thesis will finish with the opportunity to fly fluid dispensing and extraction experiments in a parabolic/orbital flight.
Key Objectives
- Explore different fluid dispensing and extraction technologies and configurations suitable for microgravity conditions.
- Study the influence of surface tension on fluid behavior during dispensing.
- Analyze bubble formation and strategies to minimize or eliminate bubbles during operations.
- Propose and design a series of experiments to test fluid dispensing in microgravity, ensuring there is no cross-contamination between wells.
- Evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of the dispensing and extraction methods for various well-plate formats (96, 384, 1536).
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Strong background in fluid mechanics and an understanding of microgravity environments.
- Experience with experimental design and data analysis.
- Familiarity with simulation tools and software for fluid dynamics (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
